People with expertise will be given priority on a topic however, members of the general public will also have their opinions included as long as they meet our basic standards and there is no conflict of interest. We encourage our readers to write on any topic that interests them however, the LSJ will prioritize local and timely topics that are likely to have more of an impact on people in Greater Lansing. The LSJ opinion section generally will publish 5-6 viewpoints per week online most, but not all, appear in the print section also. Viewpoints are more in depth, generally 500 words, and must be submitted by a person with some sort of expertise on the topic - professional, volunteer or personal experience preferred. Letters should be 175 words or fewer and focus on a single topic. Letters to the editor are submissions from the general public, organized into a monthly online package that may also appear in print if space allows.
